Walk into any heat treatment shop in Chakan MIDC or Ranjangaon and ask the furnace operator what keeps them up at night. Distortion is usually near the top of the list. Automotive components are rarely that forgiving.
Transmission gears, for example, are typically made from case-hardening grades like 20MnCr5, 16MnCr5, or 17CrNiMo6 — steels with carefully controlled hardenability that need to be quenched in a temperature window that avoids both too-rapid surface hardening (causing cracking) and insufficient core hardening (causing fatigue failure).
